Feb 6 meeting – Galaxy Evolution in Groups and Clusters

Please join us for our monthly meeting on February 6 at 8pm to hear Dr. Laura Parker. This meeting is open to the general public, and new members are always welcome!

Our meeting will be:

Thursday, February 7th at 8:00 PM Royal Canadian Legion Branch 551, 2nd Floor79 Hamilton St N, Waterdown ON  L0R 2H0

Dr. Parker will present an observational overview of how galaxies evolve over cosmic time. This talk will focus on the role that the host environment plays in the evolution of galaxy shapes and star formation. She will share some recent work from her research group that explores the galaxy transformations that occur in the most extreme host environment, rich galaxy clusters.

Dr. Laura Parker is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University. Her research group is interested in questions related to galaxy evolution and observational cosmology. In particular her group is trying to understand the connection between observed galaxy properties and the properties of the environments in which we find them, including the relationship between galaxies and their host dark matter halos.

Dr. Parker completed her PhD in Physics at the University of Waterloo in 2005 and was then a postdoctoral fellow at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Munich Germany before returning to Canada in 2007 to join the faculty at McMaster.
