The Education and Public Outreach Committee of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada is launching a brand new program as part of International Astronomy Day and we need your help to do it.
This project, called Creation Station, establishes a dedicated place on the RASC website to showcase imaginative work relating to astronomy and space created by children and youth. Children across Canada will be encouraged to submit stories and poems, art pieces and illustrations that will be published on the website and, possibly, printed in future publications such as SkyNews for everyone to see.
Creation Station aims to further the RASC’s mission of enhancing understanding of and inspiring curiosity about the Universe through public outreach, by engaging with children and youth through informal channels. It also encourages and celebrates the ‘A’ in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.)
Creation Station will begin as a pilot project for children in two age ranges: 5 to 9 and 10-12. Submissions may be in the form of stories, poems, drawings or comics. Content will be wide ranging and include any topic relating to an aspect of space sciences and astronomy.
Submissions will be collected at email@example.com accompanied by a form from parents or legal guardians granting permission for the child to participate in the project and potentially have their work published by the RASC. The pilot project runs from May 15th to June 13th.
Submissions will be reviewed by the committee before being published on the RASC website in June. The committee will recommend a selection of outstanding submissions to print in the Sept/Oct 2021 edition of SkyNews.
Help us get the word out by promoting this on social media, and directly to your networks. We would love to get this in the hands of teachers, local libraries, Guide and Scout groups, Boys & Girls clubs, etc.
Here is the accompanying text in both English and French and the Creation Station Poster is attached below. The website for Creation Station https://rasc.ca/creationstation is still under construction but should be live by May 15th.
Are you curious about the universe? Do you spend your nights watching the moon and the stars, dream about being an astronaut or finding alien life? We want you to let your imagination run wild!
To celebrate International Astronomy Day, the RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) invites kids ages 5-12 to share your short stories, drawings, poems and comics about Astronomy and Space. These wonderful creations will be shared on our website for all to enjoy.
Between May 15th-June 13th, submit your creation with your parents’ help and become the first contributors to Creation Station. Every child who participates will receive a certificate of participation, and a few chosen entries will be invited to share their creation at the RASC National General Assembly. Several stories will also be included in the Sept/Oct edition of SkyNews magazine to celebrate Science Literacy Week, and some kids may be invited to share their creation at their closest RASC Centre.
